Abstracts should be 230-300 words to be published by ALTA.

For Australian Academics:
Australian academics in some universities may be able to claim their abstract as a E3 publication. Academics should check with their University as to whether they give recognition for Conference abstracts.

For New Zealand Academics:
New Zealand authors should keep evidence of the ALTA refereeing process to support a ‘quality assured’ classification for their published ALTA conference papers.

ALTA Annual Conference

James Cook University Cairns to Host 63rd Annual ALTA Conference

In 2008 the ALTA Conference will be hosted by the Law School at James Cook University (JCU). The Conference will take place on the Cairns Campus and will run from Sunday 6 July 2008 to Wednesday 9 July 2008.

The Theme for the conference is:
The Law, the Environment, Indigenous Peoples: Climate for Change?

Please click on the JCU logo to go to the Official Conference Page

In accordance with the traditional practice of ALTA Conferences there will be a number of plenary sessions addressing aspects of the conference theme as well as the usual substantial number of interest group sessions.  At this stage, the Conference Committee has secured a range of exciting plenary speakers including Justice Nicola Pain of the NSW Land and Environment Court, Mr Stephen Keim SC, Mr Parry Agius, Ms Nicole Watson, Mr Phil Falk and Dr Mary Heath.

While the Committee encourage interest group papers which focus on the theme of the conference, papers on topics that fit into any of the interest groups are welcome (see the ALTA website for a list of interest groups – www.alta.edu.au).  The closing date for abstract submission is 7 April, 2008.  See the Conference website for further information on the abstract process.

The Conference Committee would also like to especially encourage those who are new to ALTA, or those who have not been to an ALTA Conference for some time to attend the 2008 Conference. Cairns and its surrounding areas have a lot to offer Conference delegates.

The Conference website is now available at
http://www.jcu.edu.au/law/alta2008/.  Details of the Conference program including social events and the registration process including accommodation options will be available on the website very soon.

If you have any queries prior to this information being made available please don’t hesitate to contact the Conference Committee at alta@jcu.edu.au.

Further Information for ALL delegates:
Submitting your ALTA Conference paper for inclusion on the Conference CD is NOT submitting your paper to be refereed and published by the ALTA Secretariat. These are separate processes.

By submitting your paper to the JALTA  process, you automatically volunteer yourself as a referee if needed.

The details of the ALTA Referee Process will be updated shortly...

Specific ALTA Criteria for publishing your Conference paper with JALTA:

You (or at least one author) MUST have presented your paper at the 2008 ALTA Conference to have it refereed.

Please make sure your paper complies with the Australian Guide to Legal Citation (we will not accept Bibliographies; your citation must be in footnotes, using the AGLC).

***Please follow the AGLC guidelines for formatting your paper (eg. the body of the paper). Click here  to download a copy of the AGLC or you can find a copy on the Melbourne University Law Review website. Papers which have not followed the guideline will be returned to the author for resubmission until all guidelines are met.

Authors cannot submit their paper to be published by the ALTA Secretariat as well as submitting the same paper to another publication unless substantial changes are made that render the paper completely different than that submitted to ALTA.
